Junior Coach/Senior Coach

What aged players are appropriate to be a junior coach in the Dare Devils program?

Any experienced youth or high school player age 13 or above is welcome to be a junior coach (exceptions can be made for mature players under the age of 13.) The head coach (or other senior coaches) will sign-off on volunteer experience forms for any junior coaches that actively participate in practices or games.

What time of the year does this program run?

The season runs from September through late March/early April.

What does a junior coach do at practice?

The first half of practice is a learn-to-skate session, and this is where we need the most assistance from junior coaches. Typically, junior coaches work one-on-one with a player to help them skate, pass the puck back and forth, shoot pucks at the net, etc. The learn-to-skate portion of practice is not very structured as we are trying to get the players comfortable being on the ice.

The 2nd half of practice is for our more seasoned players and we do structured drills led by the head coaches. The junior coaches help lead the drills, demonstrate skills and assist in keeping the players focused.

When are practices and how often are they?

Practice: Practice is held on Saturdays from 9:00AM-10:30am throughout the season. The first 45 minutes is for our learn-to-skate players and the second 45 minutes is for our intermediate and advanced players.

Games: We play approximately four home games per year and host one tournament. Junior coaches are welcome at all home games. We play several away games and tournaments every season. It is generally difficult for junior coaches to travel, but they are always welcome to assist.

What are the expectations of Junior Coaches during games?

Junior coaches can help on the ice or on the bench during games. On the ice, junior coaches will shadow players that need extra assistance and help them be in the proper position, reinforce what goal they are scoring on, etc. On the bench, junior coaches might help with door duties, line changes, pep talks, etc.
